Eastwood
Volunteer Bureau would like to thank ESCAPE and the Eastwood branch
of Safeways for their permission to use the design of the stained
glass window from the Café at Safeways for the cover of the
directory and on this Website. The window design summarises the purposed
of our work - people sharing information and providing support to
each other. ESCAPE have provided the following information about their
group.
Have you ever felt trapped and would like to escape?
That's how a group of elderly ladies who live in the Eastwood area
of Nottinghamshire felt until they joined the ESCAPE group. This
is a group of ladies who meet every Friday and, whilst enjoying
a good laugh and a joke with friends, have learned how to put their
skills to good use.
And
what do they produce? Believe it or not, they have produced numerous
stained glass windows which can now be seen in such buildings as
Nottinghamshire County hall, Beeston Town Hall, Eastwood Council
Offices, The European Parliament Building in London and various
local libraries and public buildings. Their latest project is now
at the United Nations Building in Geneva.
The group was formed ten years ago for the benefit
of ladies over the age of sixty, who for various reasons are unable
to get out and about without help, to enjoy the social activities
that are available. Carers are also welcomed to the group. There
are two accomplished group leaders who have taught the ladies all
the necessary skills and also two or three volunteers who see to
their refreshments.
The
group has been featured on local radio and on television several
times and visitors to the group who have seen the ladies at work
have been amazed at their work, especially in view of the ages of
those involved.
So, if you are thinking of installing a new stained glass window
- one that is to your own design and handmade - please contact Mrs Susan Bagshaw at Eastwood Volunteer Bureau on 01773 535255 or
e-mail her at chair@evbvols.org.uk.
All commissions are welcome and estimates are available on request.
